Dr. Radha Venkatesan, Executive Scientific Officer and Head of the Molecular Genetics department of Madras Diabetes Research Foundation, has been working in the field of diabetes research for 20 years. The department of Molecular Genetics in MDRF is her brainchild. Her major scientific field of interest is Human Molecular Genetics. She has more than 25 years of experience in teaching and guiding Ph.D students. She is a recognized guide in Madras University for PhD programme. She has carried out many projects as Principal Investigator, in the field of molecular and functional genomics of diabetes supported by various funding agencies including the ICMR, DBT, DST and International collaborative project with ICMR-University of Minnesota, USA. She has to her credit 100 publications including book chapters and original research publications on the genetics of diabetes in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Genetics and Nature, particularly a cover article in nature on Genome Asia. She is a lead investigator of Large scale GWAS of Type 2 diabetes and pharmacogenomics, along with the University of Dundee, funded by NIHR, UK. She is extensively trained in NGS, structural and functional genomics techniques having been trained in Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Steno Diabetes Centre, Denmark, Genentech, USA and in OHSU, USA. She has extensive collaboration both nationally and internationally. Her lab serves as a Nodal Centre for Genomics of Monogenic diabetes, under the support of ICMR. Her major interests are in monogenic forms of diabetes and as a result of her work, a number of children have undergone a change in treatment strategy with success. She serves as a reviewer for various journals such as Nature Reviews Endocrinology, International Journal of Obesity, IJMR, DRCP, Gene, Acta Diabetogica, and BMC Genetics. She has served as the lead participant of Monogenic Diabetes meeting, University of Exeter Medical School, Exeter, UK in the year 2019, continues to serve as a mentor for students of University of Chicago, USA, through the program from Centre for Global Health. She is a recipient of many awards including Dr. G. Jayaraman Oration award of University of Madras, Chennai and is a regular Faculty of INSPIRE programme of DST for science students.
