Prof Govindasamy Kumaramanickavel works on ocular genomics - primarily involved in gene mapping, mutational screening and association studies including genome-wide in complex and Mendelian ophthalmic diseases. He is the Director of Research at Narayana Nethralaya, Bangalore, India. He was Research Fellow at the Ocular Gene Mapping Laboratory, Department of Biochemistry, University of Otago, New Zealand. He is also Fogarty Visiting Associate at the Ophthalmic Genetics & Clinical Services Branch, National Eye Institute, National Institute of Health, USA. He was the Executive Officer (Medical) and Deputy Research Director at SankaraNethralaya and was Research Director at Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital, Mumbai. He was involved in glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and paediatric epidemiological and genetic research projects comprising of 35,000 subjects. Over the past 30 years, he has done genetic counselling for over 12,000 patients. He teaches medical and ophthalmic genetics in India and several overseas countries. He graduated in medicine (MBBS) from the University of Madras, Madras Medical College, India and subsequently graduated in MD (Physiology). He is a visiting professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and Sree Balaji Medical College Hospital and College and several universities in China and India. He has received funding for research projects from DBT, DST, ICMR, CSIR (all Government of India); National Institutes of Health, USA; INSERM, France and other private funding agencies. He has over 120 peer-reviewed publications including articles in Nature Genetics. He is a recognized PhD guide for various universities in India and abroad.
