Dr. Subramaniam Ganesh is currently a Professor and the Dean of Research & Development at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. He received his Ph.D. in molecular genetics from the Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi in the year 1996, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the RIKEN Brain Science Institute, Japan until the end of 2001. He joined the IITK faculty in the year 2002. Prof. Ganesh teaches biology to undergraduate and post-graduate students at IIT Kanpur. In addition, Prof. Ganesh leads a strong group with research focus on neurobiology of disorders, stress biology, and human genetics. A pioneer in the study of Lafora disease (LD), Prof. Ganesh established that LD proteins play critical roles in protein quality control which redefined a very old concept that LD is a metabolic disorder. His work established the molecular basis for Lafora disease and avenues for therapeutic interventions. Prof. S.Ganesh is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India and the Indian Academy of Sciences, Bangalore. His other honors include Outstanding Young Scientist” by SCOPUS (Elsevier South Asia), Department of Biotechnology (Govt. of India – National Bioscience Award for Career Development), and the B.M.Birla Science Centre (Birla Science Prize for young scientist in Biological Sciences 2009) and as the “Outstanding Research Investigator” by the Science Research Council of the Department of Atomic Energy. He was also awarded the CDRI Award for Excellence in Drug Research (CDRI, Lucknow), Rajib Goyal Prize in Life Sciences (Goyal Foundation, Kurukshetra University), the Ramanna Fellowship by the Department of Sciences & Technology, Govt. of India, and the Tata Innovation Fellowship of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India.
